Day 1
A representative from Kiboko will welcome you at Lilongwe International Airport and escort you towards the charter aircraft which will fly you over to Likoma Island (flight time: approximately 1 hour). After the landing at Likoma Island a representative from Kaya Mawa Lodge will transfer you to the Kaya Mawa Lodge. You stay at the eco- and environmentally friendly Kaya Mawa Lodge (overlooking lake Malawi/Niassa), situated on the Southern part of the Island and built out of rocks and mostly indigenous materials, using the skills and dedication of the Island population.

Day 2
Stay the whole day on Likoma Island. Likoma Island is situated along the coast of Mozambique but still belongs to Malawi. Here you can visit the beautiful beaches of the Island and swim, snorkel and relax but also walk around the Island and visit the Cathedral of St. Peter. This huge cathedral, one of Malawi’s most remarkable buildings, had been built and completed in 1905 by UMCA (Universities Mission of Central Africa) missionaries.

Day 3
After breakfast you will be transferred at 09.30 AM by a boat of the Nkwichi Lodge to the shore of Mozambique (boat transfer: approximately 1.5 hours, incl. border formalities). The staff will assist you to handle the border formalities at Likoma Island to exit Malawi and in Cobue to enter into Mozambique. The boat will now continue over the lake to the Manda Wilderness Reserve where the staff of the Nkwichi Lodge will welcome you and show you to your luxury chalets with veranda, overlooking the beautiful views over Lake Niassa/Malawi. Nkwichi (translated “sand that squeaks”) is the first community and wildlife based conservation project on the shores of Lake Niassa (the Mozambique side of Lake Malawi). Access is only possible by boat or foot. The foundation in association with the local Chiefs and Provincial Government has established a community game reserve of 100,000 hectares. The land preserves forever the wildlife and fantastic scenery of Northern Niassa province. Your extraordinary stay at the lodge will benefit and the support the people living in this area of Mozambique through community run development project. This is tourism at its most ethical.

Day 4
You will start your guided walks and game activities with guides of the Nkwichi Lodge, inside the 100,000 hectares of reserve visiting waterfalls and view points. Side excursions to local villages and community projects can also be organized.

Day 5
After a breakfast Mchenga Nkwichi Lodge a boat transfer will bring you back to Cobue where you will leave Mozambique. You continue to Likoma Island where after the border formalities our charter aircraft will fly us back to Lilongwe, arriving in the afternoon.

Additional Information
  • All the accommodation is based on two persons sharing.
  • Towels bedding and mosquito nets are provided during the whole safari.
  • Optional activities are:
    Motorized water sports
    Scuba diving
    For the rest all the activities mentioned included, snorkelling, sailing, kayaking, canoeing, excursions, nature walks.
  • The fees for the visa to Mozambique vary between 35 and 75 US per person. The visa for Mozambique has to be arranged in advance or in some cases at the border post of Cobue. An additional immigration fee of 3 US dollar has to be paid on entry at the Mozambique border post. Please consult your travel agent for more updated information.
  • Drinks are not included in the price of the safari.
  • Malaria prophylaxes are highly recommended.
  • There is always a supply of 20 litres of purified drinking water inside the vehicle.
  • At Likoma Island electricity (240 V) is available most of the time
  • At Nkwichi Lodge no electricity is available.
  • Both Lodges will take US dollars cash and TC’s for optional payment like bar taps and extra personal expenditures.
  • There is a bank and a bureau the change at the airport.
  • Credit Cards payment and money with draws are very limited in Malawi. There are ATM machines in Lilongwe and the airport available but they are limited to the withdraw of 200 US in local currency only using mastercard or visa.
